A storey by the sea

The decision to add a second storey to the Jindalee family home of Stephen and Victoria Burton was made to maximise the potential of the property and its beachside location.
The couple, who had been heavily involved in the design stage of their home just four years earlier, felt the time was right to build upward and enlisted the help of Summit Home Improvements to do so.
“We both were looking to improve and extend the existing house and make good use of the elevated position on the coast – that is, taking in the sea views,” Mr Burton said.
The addition has done just that, adding important height to the home to improve its sea views while introducing an upstairs retreat with a master bedroom, sitting area, living room, twin walk-in robes and an ensuite.
Importantly for the Burtons it did so while remaining true to the Hampton-like style of the existing home – something the couple had insisted on from the outset after seeing the way other jobs from around the area had been carried out.
“The main focus was to ensure the upper storey tied in aesthetically with the existing dwelling, and to use the same materials where practical,” Mr Burton said.
“We were conscious and more than aware of renovations in the north of Perth that appeared to have a ‘box on the top’ type renovation, and this was not an option for us.” Building a second storey extension to the intricate style of the pre-existing home was a challenge which presented some concern for the couple, but they said the results spoke for themselves and credited their builder’s dedication to the project.
“Construction commencement was during the winter months, and we were concerned with the potential of water ingress due to the removal of the existing roof structure,” Mr Burton said.
“However, our on-site supervisor was on-hand and attended the site when necessary to ensure all was well. This level of attention to detail ensured the construction activities went smoothly.”
The Burtons said they couldn’t be happier with the renovated extension to their home, which delivered the lifestyle benefi ts they wanted without compromising the look and feel of the original product.
“We are left with a beautiful sustainable home that continues to deliver on many fronts – viewing wonderful sunsets in the evening, and additional living areas to relax and unwind,” Mr Burton said.
“Both my wife and I would not hesitate to recommend Summit Home Improvements in the near future, and will continue to promote the concept of renovation as a viable option to friends, family and anybody else interested in our home.”
